    Kuo, Tong Jong  1927-2022

Professor Kuo, Tong Jong was born in Chiayi in 1927. He graduated from Chiayi Agriculture and Forestry Public School in 1945. After World War II, he was admitted to the Art Department of Taiwan Normal College in 1950. After completing his studies in Taiwan, he went to Japan to study in 1962, first at Musashino Art University, and received master's degrees from Waseda University and Tokyo University of the Arts. Professor Kuo once served as a distinguished chair professor in the Department of Visual Arts (including master’s program) of National Chiayi University, and was awarded the Outstanding Alumni of National Chiayi University. In 1957, he co-founded the Fifth Moon Art Group with Liu, Kuo Sung (1932-), Li, Fang chih (1933-) and other classmates. This painting group had a profound influence on Taiwan's modern painting movement, and also led to the abstract trend and ink painting trend in post-war Taiwanese painting innovation.

Professor Kuo had enthusiasm for art through his life and devoted himself to the creation of Western paintings. He did not stick to a single painting style, so artistic styles from concrete to abstract were all forms of expression he was good at. He had received rigorous training in oil painting techniques. In his realistic paintings, his short and powerful brushstrokes allowed colors to overlap and interweave into colorful and detailed pictures. His painting style mainly covered modern times from Impressionism to (including Neo-Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, etc.) artistic features. The depiction of characters used flexible and smooth lines and brushstrokes to depict the character's personality, posture and expression. Abstract paintings often used the automatism of random dripping and the appropriate control of hue, brightness and chroma to create a sense of space and rhythm in the picture, reflecting his keen and rich inner world. His painting philosophy was as he once said: "The painting style without a fixed style is my personality, that is, my painting style."
