Technician Liu Hung-Tse, Alumnus of NCYU's Department of Agronomy, Showcases Agricultural Expertise and Brings Honor to Taiwan

Technician Liu Hung-Tse, a graduate of the master's program in the Department of Agronomy at National Chiayi University, recently participated in the 2024 Organic World Congress (OWC). Fluently presenting in English, he showcased the innovative achievements realized during his tenure with the Papua New Guinea Technical Mission. Liu successfully installed eagle perches in upland rice fields, fostering a symbiotic relationship between eagles and rice. He also formulated molasses-based liquid fertilizer using agricultural byproducts to integrate rice straw with vegetable gardens. His innovative work received widespread recognition.

During his studies at NCYU, Liu was deeply influenced by the organic farming philosophy advocated by Prof. Chang Hsueh-Wei from the Department of Agronomy. Prof. Chang emphasized in class that agriculture is not only about producing food, but also about balancing the well-being of producers, consumers, and ecosystems. Inspired by this philosophy, Liu actively pursued research and practice in organic agriculture. In addition to acquiring professional skills, he utilized resources from NCYU Language Center to enhance his English skills and participated in various language-learning activities. While pursuing his graduate studies at NCYU, he also enrolled in elective courses at the Graduate Institute of Marketing Management, which further strengthened his international outlook.

Agriculture in developing countries often faces challenges due to factors such as resource scarcity, inadequate infrastructure, and the inevitable impact of climate change. Farming knowledge is primarily passed down orally, and language, culture, and technology present significant barriers that are difficult to overcome. Since starting his work in Papua New Guinea in 2021, Liu has visited 13 tribes to study the lifestyles of local farmers and the community culture. He developed a series of localized strategies, primarily focused on low-input techniques and ecological farming methods. Committed to realizing the concept of sustainable agriculture, Liu’s approach not only focuses on ensuring adequate nutrition and education for children but also promotes harmonious coexistence with the environment.

Liu expressed that, at the time, he didn’t know what outcomes his efforts would yield, but he knew that doing nothing would lead to no results at all. Looking back, he considered even the efforts that failed to yield the expected results a form of laying the foundation for future progress. With this proactive mindset, Liu has shone on the international stage, bringing great honor to Taiwan.
