NCYU Hosts Grass Owl Conservation Alliance Exchange Platform Meeting to Promote Ecological Conservation Advance through Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

On November 4th, the “Grass Owl Conservation Alliance Exchange Platform Meeting” was held in the Auditorium of the NCYU Library on the Lantan campus. The event was co-organized by NCYU’s Department of Biological Resources and the Chiayi Branch, Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture. NCYU continues to join hands with experts from various sectors across the country to promote the conservation of grass owls in southwestern Taiwan, highlighting its active role in ecological protection and sustainable development.

In his opening remarks, NCYU President Han-Chien Lin expressed his delight in witnessing continued efforts from all sectors to promote grass owl conservation. NCYU attaches great importance to ecological conservation, and has been ranked among the top 25% of green universities in the world for its support of biodiversity research through practical actions. He expressed hopes that, through collaboration among the university, government agencies, and all sectors of society, grass owl conservation and the sustainable protection of other satoyama species would continue, fostering an environment for more species to thrive in the region.

The meeting brought together over 100 conservation partners and experts with concerns about grass owls from nearly 20 institutions in such areas as agriculture, transportation, water conservancy, academia, and NGOs. With a focus on cross-disciplinary collaboration, they shared and discussed their best practices and achievements in conservation from the past year. Through case studies shared by various units, participants explored challenges in habitat maintenance, conservation measures for grass owl habitats in water conservancy projects. They worked together to formulate solutions and open up new opportunities for future cooperation.

During the meeting, the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency shared the latest version of the Conservation Action Plan for the Australasian Grass-Owl. They emphasized that through strategies such as ecosystem service payments and cross-departmental collaboration, grass owl conservation will be further strengthened. With joint efforts of all units, the plan aims to improve the habitat and living environment of the grass owl, bring new vitality to the ecosystem of Taiwan’s southwestern region, and realize the vision of harmonious coexistence between humans and grass owls. Results of the “Ecosystem Service Payment Program” in recent years were presented by county and city governments, along with commissioned conservation teams. They highlighted the actual results and social impact of the policy in grass owl habitat protection, expected to lead to more specific collaboration in the future. According to Dr. Jo-Szu Tsai, Assistant Professor of NCYU’s Department of Biological Resources, through cooperation with different institutions, significant progress in grass owl conservation has been seen in Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, which contributes to stable development of grass owl populations.

Since joining the Grass Owl Conservation Alliance in 2018, NCYU is committed to habitat maintenance and the construction of ecological corridors. It has made remarkable results in protecting grass owls and their habitats by integrating academic research with conservation efforts. Looking ahead, NCYU will continue to work with various partners to promote grass owl conservation, and further contribute to the goal of conserving Taiwan’s grass owl ecosystems through participation in annual meetings.
