The general assembly of the Taiwan Green Extraction Industry Alliance for Plant-Derived Natural Products (TGEIA), took place on Sep. 13th at the International Conference Hall, Lantan campus, National Chiayi University. Themed “Green Plant Extracts, Infinite Value,” the conference attracted over 30 farmer and corporate members to participate, thanks to enormous support from the Department of Academia-Industry Collaboration and Science Park Affairs, National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). Experts, scholars and alliance members gathered to discuss the innovative applications and future prospects of green extraction technology in Taiwan's traditional Chinese medicine industry.
In her speech, Jau-Rong Chen, Deputy Director of the Department of Academia-Industry Collaboration and Science Park Affairs, NSTC, stated that TGEIA is one of the industry-academia technology alliances supported by NSTC. The Department of Academia-Industry Collaboration and Science Park Affairs is dedicated to encouraging academic and research institutions to fully utilize their mature core technology capabilities via establishing technological cooperation alliances with upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors. By systematically expanding the technologies and increasing service capacity, the goal is to achieve technology commercialization, and product internationalization. In addition to utilizing green extraction, patented and mass production technologies, NCYU has achieved mass production and commercialization in collaboration with local agricultural production and marketing groups, and expanded both domestic and international markets through marketing companies. The fruitful outcomes of upstream, midstream, downstream sectors, as well as domestic and international markets are highly commendable.
The latest progress in TGEIA’s services for extraction, nutritional formulations, and traditional Chinese medicine planting technology was introduced by three alliance leaders, including Prof. Chen Cheng-Nan from NCYU’s Department of Biochemical Science and Technology, Prof. Chin-Yu Liu from Fu Jen Catholic University's Department of Nutritional Science, and Prof. Wen-Lian Chen from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University's Department of Biological Science and Technology. They presented certificates to alliance advisors and members. In the presence of Tseng-Ju Hsu, Director of the Department of Academia-Industry Collaboration and Science Park Affairs, NSTC, NCYU President Han-Chien Lin signed an industry-academia cooperation memorandum with representatives from Sun Ten Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Taiyen Biotech Co., Ltd., Chou Chin Industrial Co., Ltd., and BeautyTech Platform Corp. The aim is to jointly promote the application and research of green chemical technology in traditional Chinese medicine products. There was also an exhibition of functional herbal tea bags developed in cooperation with the Traditional Chinese Medicine Center, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, showcasing the practical results of green extraction technology in the research and development of functional crops.
Since its establishment earlier this year, TGEIA has actively leveraged
the strengths of industry, academia, and research institutes, and collaborated
with farmers and enterprises sharing the same vision. They have jointly
promoted green extraction technology in the international market, and advanced
research and application of green Chinese medicine products to achieve the goal
of sustainable development. In his opening remarks, NCYU President Han-Chien
Lin said that green chemistry focuses on reducing potential waste and pollution
from the very beginning of the production process. It aims to reduce the impact
on the environment through more environmentally friendly means. This approach
differs from post-production waste treatment, as it takes environmental
protection into consideration during the product design and manufacturing
process in pursuit of sustainable development. President Lin also emphasized
that NCYU would spare no effort in promoting technological cooperation and
knowledge sharing to enhance Taiwan's international competitiveness in
functional crop development and herbal medicine extraction.
