Autobiography

Shih-Yun Hsieh is currently Professor and Chair of the Music Department at National Chiayi University.  Being an active violinist, Dr. Hsieh was trained in Taiwan and U.S.A.  She received her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music from the University of Maryland-College Park, and her Bachelor of Music from the National Taiwan Normal University.  Her teachers include Nannete Chen, Daniel Heifetz, Gerald Fischbach, and James Stern.  Dr. Hsieh has devoted herself to both performing and teaching the violin.  She has made appearances at the Music Center at Strathmore, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Smithsonian Museum, Georgetown University “Friday Music Series”, Sandy Spring Museum “The Lyceum Series”, BlackRock Center for the Arts and National Chiang-Kai Shek Cultural Center.  She has also participated in the research and recording project of the Applications and Promotion for Violin Archives of Chimei Museum, and her recording has been published by Chimei Museum. Besides being an accomplished concert violinist, Dr. Hsieh also has tremendous enthusiasm for violin teaching.  She has studied Suzuki method with John Kendall, a pioneer of Suzuki method in USA, and Ronda Cole, a renowned Suzuki teacher’s trainer.  Dr. Hsieh feels the importance of promoting music to younger generations and is frequently invited to give lectures and master classes.
