Introduction
The Department of Civil and Water Resources Engineering of National Chiayi University (NCYU) was founded in 1970, and was located in the Lantan main campus. The department offers Bachelor of Science, M.S., and In-service Master's Program degrees. Currently, the Department has approximately 262 day-time undergraduate students, 156 night-time undergraduate students and 57 graduate students enrolled in the program. The student to faculty ratio was kept at a low level; therefore, our students have the best opportunity to receive the guidance from our dedicated faculty.
Course Design
For undergraduate study, the Department has developed a curriculum providing students with a broad base on which to build an engineering career. Courses include both basic sciences (physics, chemistry, and applied mathematics), and engineering sciences (mechanics, materials, computer programming, fluid mechanics, graphics engineering, structural theory, surveying, soil mechanics, reinforced concrete, hydraulic engineering, soil and water conservation engineering, hydrology engineering, foundation engineering, and engineering geology). The Department provides civil and water resources engineering laboratory courses on materials, soil, surveying, and hydraulics.
To obtain a B.S. degree, a student has to complete a minimum of 128 credit hours. In addition to 87 required credit hours, according to his/her own interest and career goal, student also has to complete at least 41 credit hocus of elective courses. Courses intended exclusively for graduate study are offered in addition to those intended for both graduate and undergraduate students. The students are free to choose from these courses as well as others provided by other departments of the University in order to help them satisfy their academic interests and achieve their career goals.
The graduate program leading to the Master of Science degree in civil and water resources engineering requires the complexion of a minimum of 30 credit hours. Among these credit hours, six credit hours for thesis are mandatory. Before entering the program, a student has to select a major field of study among geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, hydraulic engineering, and surveying engineering. On the basis of his/her own interest and in consultation with a faculty adviser, a student may develop his/her own program of study. In general, attainment of the degree requires two academic years of full-time study.
Faculty
The Department presently has 12 full-time faculties and 2 non-tenure lectures. The Department's teaching and research activities include hydraulic engineering, water resources engineering, soil and water conservation engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and construction management. Faculties in the department all have excellent enthusiasm on both teaching and research. Department is recruiting outstanding researchers and scholars to join our growing program.
Facility
The Department is located at the Engineering Hall, a modern five-story building, including numerous teaching laboratories for undergraduate courses and individual laboratories for faculties. In addition, a hall for Hydraulic and Engineering Materials Testing Laboratories is available for laboratory testing and research activities.
Prospective
The Department of Civil and Water Resources Engineering at National Chiayi University offers civil and water resources engineering education as well as research opportunities for society and the nation. The Department aims to establish integrated research programs of civil and water resources engineering.
